What is Sensitive Information?

Sensitive information refers to information whose unauthorized disclosure may have serious adverse effect on the University’s reputation, resources, services, or individuals. Information protected under federal or state regulations or due to proprietary, ethical, or privacy considerations will typically be classified as sensitive.

A category of sensitive information is Private Personal Information (PPI). It is information which can be used to uniquely identify, contact or locate a single person, or may enable disclosure of personal information.
Examples include:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Birth Date
  • Gender
  • National ID (i.e., Social Security Number)
  • Driver's License Number
  • Credit Card Number
  • Student Records
  • Individually identifiable Patient Health Information
  • Individually identifiable Human Subject Research
