Anti-Virus Protection at U-M

One of the most important ways you can protect your computer is to use anti-virus software. We strongly recommend that you download and install one of the following anti-virus products.

Windows Windows 10
Windows Defender is automatically built into Windows 10.

Windows 8
Windows Defender is automatically built into Windows 8.

Windows 7/Vista
Use Microsoft Security Essentials. Be sure to uninstall your current anti-virus product before installing Microsoft Security Essentials.

(Microsoft Security Essentials is NOT for use on university-owned computers.)

MiWorkspace Computers
MiWorkspace-managed computers come with anti-virus software already installed.

Other University-Owned Computers
Windows 10
Windows Defender is automatically built into Windows 10. Note that Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Security is not compatible with Windows 10.

Windows 8
Windows Defender is automatically built into Windows 8.

Windows 7/Vista
Use Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection:
