Phishing Message or Scam Summary

Members of the U-M community are seeing a recurrance of a phishing scam that impersonates notable U-M faculty and staff. These messages will sometimes appear to relate to appeals for financial assistance as shown in the example below. The email addresses these messages appear to be from have been faked, you should not reply to them. Past versions of this scam have offered employment, or asked for help purchasing gift cards. If you receive any such messages, you should delete them without responding. If you receive any sort of unusual requests for payments, especially electronic payments in cryptocurrency, gift cards, pre-paid cards, or similar, do not reply to them. If you need to check with the person the message appears to be from, do so in a new email you compose, a text, or a phone call - replies to the messages themselves will only alert the scammers they have your attention.
