ITSS: Information Technology Security Services - Keeping IT Safe at U-M

Managed Security Services

Units throughout the University face rapidly growing threats to their IT assets. They’re entrusted with a variety of sensitive information (relating to students, employees, patients, research, and others) and are obligated to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of that information and the systems used to process it. Often, developing or acquiring the expertise needed to perform the necessary IT security activities is difficult at best.

ITSS offers Managed Security Services to fill the gap between requirements for information security and the resource limitations within many University units. Through Managed Security Services, ITSS provides a qualified University Information Security Coordinator to become a regular, part-time member of the unit, promoting consistent and effective IT security management.

The Security Coordinator will collaborate with unit staff to develop an IT Security Plan, then maintain the Plan as risks evolve over the years to come. Following the strategies prescribed in the Plan, the Security Coordinator's regular responsibilities cover multiple aspects of IT security coordination and administration:

  • Responding to information security incidents
  • Conducting risk assessments
  • Developing unit-specific policies and procedures
  • Providing education and promoting awareness
  • Implementing network-based attack mitigation
  • Assisting with the evaluation of proposed technologies
