Service Description

The MICHR REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) system is a secure, web-based application designed to support data capture for research studies. REDCap provides: 1) an intuitive interface for data entry (with data validation); 2) audit trails for tracking data manipulation and export procedures; 3) automated export procedures for seamless data downloads to common statistical packages (SPSS, SAS, Stata, R): 4) procedures for importing data from external sources; and 5) advanced features, such as branching logic and calculated fields within electronic forms and the survey feature. REDCap was initially developed and deployed at Vanderbilt University but now has collaborative support from a wide consortium of domestic and international partners.

This service is available to: Michigan Medicine, University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, Flint, Dearborn

The MICHR REDCap environments are approved by Michigan Medicine Compliance to maintain protected health information but are not 21 CFR Part 11 certified or validated.

MICHR’s REDCap servers are physically located in the University of Michigan (UM) Health Information Technology and Services (HITS) data centers. REDCap securely supports multi-site clinical trials; users outside the UM Medical School access REDCap via a secure, 2-tier authentication system. The application provides audit trails on user access to MICHR and HITS technical and support teams. Backup of data and regular vulnerability testing are performed by HITS.

MICHR’s REDCap is for Non-Commercial Research Purposes. “Non-Commercial Research Purposes'' means for internal research, internal operations, and internal educational purposes only, which research, operational or educational uses are to be conducted in a manner consistent with U-M’s tax-exempt status and may include research funded by commercial (for profit) organizations but shall not include use of the REDCap Software as the basis for providing a contract or other services to any entity.
