It's Everyone's (But the Children's) Home: A Look at Child Safety in the Smart Home

With growing adoption of smart home technologies, families and children are often featured in smart home product marketing as target audiences, while concerns about child physical and digital safety and privacy are emerging. In this Zoom session, Kaiwen Sun, U-M School of Information Ph.D. candidate, discussed the juxtaposition of marketing depiction of children's harmonious smart home experiences with vendors' limited product features and resources for families, and parents' concerns for child safety in the smart home, to reveal the discrepancies we need to consider in better addressing child safety in the smart home.

Kaiwen Sun

Kaiwen Sun is a PhD candidate at the University of Michigan, School of Information, advised by Florian Schaub and Chris Brooks. Her research focuses on the intersection of children’s privacy and safety, smart home technologies, and human-computer interaction, particularly understanding children and parents’ perceptions and behaviors around privacy and safety in the context of smart home technologies. Prior to her doctoral study, Kaiwen obtained a master's degree in human computer interaction at the University of Michigan with an emphasis on UX research and design.
