Phishing Alert: Support Christina

Date Sent:
Monday, June 19, 2023

Summary

A real umich email address from a U-M department was spoofed. It was used to send an email that asked recipients to visit a fundraising website and donate to a charity (an alleged U-M student). The email purports that the U-M department sponsors the fundraiser. The donation website is legitimate, but the fraudulent use of it in this email was not.

Two subjects were used: "Support Christina" and "Christina's Fight Against Colorectal Cancer - IVC."

Fundraising emails that imply they are endorsed by U-M can be verified by the department or reported, if email abuse is suspected.

Phishing Email Text

Hello

I thought you might be interested in supporting Christina to fight colorectal cancer by simply buying her a coffee

Even a small donation could help reach her fundraising goal. And if you can't make a donation, it would be great if you could share to help spread the word.

She needs our support as a student of Umich and a friend. She is at the last stage of transitioning and all she wish is for her program to be funded to create more awareness for colorectal cancer

Thanks for taking a look!
