Who is required to take this training?
All university faculty, staff, and workforce members are required to complete annual data protection training and regularly engage in information assurance awareness campaigns. This includes temporary staff and student employees.
Certain job functions or working with specific types of data require additional specialized education. The university and its units may, at their discretion, mandate U-M faculty, staff, workforce members, or sponsored affiliates to complete specific training and compliance activities.
Training assignments are based on current HR records that are updated nightly. If your job status has changed or you think you received this notification by mistake, please check with your unit HR representative.
While most Michigan Medicine and Medical School employees will complete their own cybersecurity training, those who also hold additional appointments on the academic campuses will also be included in this program.
Why do I have to take this training?
This initiative, prioritized by university leadership, is designed to help every member of our campus community recognize evolving threats and strengthen their daily security habits. The training underscores U-M’s commitment to safeguarding sensitive information and supporting uninterrupted academic and operational excellence.
What happens if I don't complete the training by the deadline?
Beginning May 2026, faculty, staff, and workforce members who have not completed DCE 101 will be logged out of all U-M Google sessions nightly until they complete the course. This includes GMail, Calendar, and Drive, as well as any app integrations (e.g., Zoom, Slack) and mobile apps.
If you are a U-M faculty, staff, or workforce member who has not taken and passed DCE 101, you will be redirected to complete the training when signing in to your U-M Google account. Once the training is complete, these interruptions will cease and full access will be restored.

I have taken this training in the past. Do I need to take it again?
The DCE 101 Cybersecurity and Data Protection course has been a requirement for certain job functions for a number of years. The course was redesigned in April 2025. If you took the course prior to April 2025, you have to take it again. If you have taken it since April 2025, you will not have to take it again until a year after your completion date.
Is there a report where Supervisors/HR can track who has completed the course and who has not?
Yes. Supervisors can see who on their team has completed the training in the My Team tab or the Manager Dashboard on the My LINC left navigation. For a more in depth report on who all in your unit has completed the training, contact your unit’s HR representative. Your UHR representative should have access to the "U-M Required Training Dashboard" in Tableau.
