Your MCard
The MCard is the official identification card for the University of Michigan community. It’s used by students, faculty, and staff to prove who they are and gain access to many services on campus, such as:
- Door access
- Campus events
- Meal plans, guest dining
- Blue Bucks
- Library privileges
- Parking
- Bus rides
- Printing
- Time keeping

Why Protect Your MCard Information?
It’s Personal: Your MCard includes your name, UMID, photo, and more. In the wrong hands, this information can enable:
- Scams: Don’t share it on social media or other public platforms. Scammers can use an image of your MCard to impersonate you in malicious activities. Think twice about accepting a photo of an MCard as “proof” you are dealing with a U-M student, for example from someone selling football tickets.
- Online Harassment/Doxing: Bad actors can use personal information available online to target you. They may use it for doxing - sharing personal information in order to expose you to harassment, stalking, or other harmful behaviors.
- Identity Theft: Information on your MCard, in addition to other details about you gathered from social media and other sources, can be used to commit fraud or other crimes.
Your MCard Includes Sensitive Data
Your UMID together with your name are sensitive data, which means they should be handled in a manner similar to data protected by FERPA.
