VisiBLUE is a website that shows members of the U-M community what kind of personal information the university collects about them, and how that information is used.
History of ViziBLUE
The idea behind ViziBLUE came from a 2018 U-M student project that proposed a prototype student data management tool to help students view, understand, and manage their personal information. The first iteration of the tool was simply a collection of links to various systems, like Wolverine Access, Google, and Canvas, where students could see, and in some cases update, their information. Work on ViziBLUE began in early 2020 with extensive support from the highest levels of university leadership.
Why was ViziBLUE created?
ViziBLUE was developed as a demonstration of the university’s commitment to transparency for its community members. It also serves to create awareness and promote accountability in the appropriate collection, use, and sharing of personal information.
Who should use ViziBLUE?
The information provided in ViziBLUE is relevant to University of Michigan faculty, staff, and students.
Why can’t I see my own data in ViziBLUE?
ViziBLUE is a collection of informational pages that provide general understanding of the personal data the university collects. Where possible, ViziBLUE pages contain links to reports and information that would allow you to see and, in some cases, update your own data.
What about my health data?
Currently, ViziBLUE does not include patient data managed by Michigan Medicine. More information about patient medical records at Michigan Medicine is available at their Medical Records page.
What is next?
The growing collection of ViziBLUE pages reflects the complexity of the university’s data ecosystem. We will continually pursue opportunities for more agency, further transforming ViziBLUE from an informational resource to an actionable solution for all members of the university community.
